SAS Press Release – Steph Lambert Joins SAS

Newly formed not-for-profit, Stand Against Slavery, is pleased to announce the appointment of Steph Lambert as the Head of Advocacy and Capacity Building.  She will lead the charge of seeking legislative reform and evidence based research on the prevalence of slavery in New Zealand, and to educate individuals, community groups, and the public & private sectors in fully understanding the issues surrounding slavery & the slave trade, and what to do in response.

Steph has substantial experience in the not-for-profit and public sectors, having worked in Europe for ten years with two charitable organisations, Next Level International and the Proton Foundation.  Steph is also a trained lawyer and practices in Criminal, Family and Civil Law in Auckland.  She has interned with International Justice Mission in Canada looking at the issue of human trafficking in Canada and has been involved in the anti-trafficking work in New Zealand since 2010.  Steph is also Co-founder and current Executive Director of Justice Acts New Zealand, a partner organisation of Stand Against Slavery.

Founder and CEO Peter Mihaere, in announcing this appointment said, “having Steph on the team is an important move for Stand Against Slavery.  The scope of the issue of slavery is significant and we believe that New Zealand needs to be actively involved in abolition.  In New Zealand, there is significant anecdotal evidence of forced labour (in the horticulture, viticulture, agriculture, building, fishing and restaurant industries); domestic servitude; and sex slavery.  New Zealand is fast becoming an attractive destination country and we must act vigilantly to protect citizens and migrants.  Steph’s contribution will advance one of Stand Against Slavery’s major goals to see New Zealand the first truly slavery free country in the world.”
